“The brutal attacks/bombings this week in New York, and Washington D.C., along with threats of attacks there and elsewhere in the country have changed our times forever. While the mass media concentrates on the details of the destruction, and the blanketed words of politicians, I will attempt to understand and explain the events from the fence. BOMBING AND BEING BOMBED ARE THE SAME THINGS ON DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE FENCE.

Terror is not a spontaneous human action without credence. People just don`t hijack planes and commit harikari (suicide) without any weight of thought to the action. No one in the media seems to ask WHY DID THESE PEOPLE DO THIS HORRIFIC ACT OF VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION? To be able to understand the answer to this, we must first look at our U.S. Mideast Policy. During most of the 20th century, U.S. businesses have worked on attaining oil rights and concessions from countries in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. After WWI, secret back door deals by our State Dept. yielded oil rights from then defeated Turkey to fields in what is now Iraq and Saudi Arabia, in return for looking the other way at a crime against humanity, the Genocide of the Armenians by the Turks. Oil profits have been the motivating factors behind many attempts at counterinsurgency of democratic regimes by the CIA and the U.S in the Middle East (such as Iran in the 1950s, where the Shah replaced the Prime Minister who refused to give up oil rights to the U.S., and since the people couldn`t deal with the Shah, an extremist government headed by the Ayatollah Khomeini ultimately prevailed). During the Iran-Iraq war, America supplied both sides with weapons and advice. These are not the actions of a rich superpower wanting peace. Let`s not forget that Saddam Hussein, before being America`s vision of the Anti-Christ, was a close ally of the U.S., and the CIA. So what was the firm belief system of consecutive American administrations that caused all this to occur? PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WILL LEAD TO HIGHER OIL AND GASOLINE PRICES. Let`s not also forget the power of the Arms industry, disguised as defense, that still sells billions of dollars of weapons to the area. Therefore it has not been in the short-term economic interest of the U.S. to foster Peace in the Middle East. Using the above reasoning, the U.S. has encouraged extremist governments, toppled democracies, as in the case of Iran to replace it with a monarchy, rigged elections, and many more unspeakable political crimes for U.S. businesses abroad. Let`s not also forget the Red Scare. During the war between the then Soviet Union and Afghanistan, the U.S. armed and supported the Taliban, a fundamentalist Muslim organization, and allowed them to export opium and heroin out of their country to pay for those weapons. Therefore the Taliban rose to power and control with the help of the U.S.A. Today, the bombing of Iraq still continues, no longer covered by the media, the economic embargo still remains, killing millions of children, and recently, while the world and the U.N. General Assembly have cried out to bring in peacekeeping forces into Israel and Palestine, to end the escalated war and recent assassinations, the U.S. has vetoed the rest of the Security Council and has halted the possibility of peace, there, in the most volatile place in the world. People in Serbia, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, and Afghanistan to name a few have seen bombs fall, not always at military targets and kill innocent civilians, as the scene in New York city yesterday. The wars waged by our government in our names has landed smack in the middle of our living room. The half hour of destruction closed down all world financial markets, struck the central headquarters of our military, and had our leaders running into bunkers, and our citizens into fear and frenzy. What scares me more than what has occurred is what our reactions to the occurrences may cause. President Bush belongs to a long generation of Republican Presidents who love war economies. The media has only concentrated on the bombings, if you will, and what type of retaliations are looming for the perpetrators. What everyone fails to realize is that the bombings are a reaction to existing injustices around the world, generally unseen to most Americans. To react to a reaction would be to further sponsor the reaction.

In other words, my belief is that the terror will multiply if concrete steps are not taken to sponsor peace in the middle east, NOW. This does not mean that we should not find the guilty party(s), Bin Laden, or whoever they may be, and not try them. Put simply, as long as a major injustice remains, violence precipitates to the surface of life. Native American folklore, the Bible, Nostradamus, and many other major religious beliefs point to this era with the visuals of yesterday`s disasters, and conditions of ecological disasters we experience daily in our lives today. War, rumors of war, famine, long burning fires, etc., are at our doorstep. We can prevail over this possible vision with the power of the human spirit, understanding, compassion, and peace. IT`S TIME TO PUT OUR NEEDS FOR SECURITY AND SURVIVAL, ACHIEVED ONLY THROUGH PEACE, ABOVE AND BEYOND PROFITS, ESPECIALLY IN THESE TIMES. SOLUTION: The U.S. should stop sidestepping the U.N. Security Council, and allow U.N. Peacekeeping troops and missions to the Middle East. Stop the violence first. Stop the bombing and patrol of Iraq. With today`s gains in the use of alternative fuels, develop them to full usage with autos and other utilities, to make the country less dependant on an already depleting natural reserve, oil.

By initiating peace, we would have already shaken the foundations of support for Bin Laden, and/or all those that sponsor activities like those we saw yesterday, and break the stronghold of extremists on the world of Islam. On the other hand, if we carry out bombings on Afghanistan or elsewhere to appease public demand, and very likely kill innocent civilians along the way, we`d be creating many more martyrs going to their deaths in retaliation against the retaliation. As shown from yesterday`s events, you cannot stop a person who`s ready to die.”

Inzwischen sind drei Tonträger-Veröffentlichungen auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben worden: Die anstehende Live-CD von Dream Theater wird aufgrund des “nicht tragbaren Covers” vorerst nicht veröffentlicht. Aus den selben Gründen wird “Party Music” des Rap-Projekts The Coup vom Markt genommen. Das Cover zeigt zwei Hochhaustürme, die nach einer Explosion brennen. Die Veröffentlichung eines Hörspiels mit dem Titel “Crashing Aeroplanes” wird ebenfalls verschoben. “Wie der Titel erahnen lässt, handelt das Hörspiel von der Darstellung des Menschlichen in Extremsituationen. Wenngleich dieses Werk von tiefstem Respekt vor seinem Thema geprägt war, so gibt es offensichtlich doch Momente, in denen die Kunst dem realen Schrecken der Welt nicht mehr standhalten kann”, so die beiden Köpfe hinter dem Werk, Andreas Ammer und FM Einheit. Auch wenn kein Muiskkonzern seinen Sitz in einem der Türme des World Trade Centers hatte, haben die US-Konzerne ihre Büros vorerst geschlossen. Vivendi Universal, Sony Music, Warner Music und EMI haben inzwischen bekannt gegeben, Geldbeträge in noch nicht genannter Höhe zu Verfügung zu stellen. Welchen Hilfseinrichtungen die Spenden im Einzelnen zugute kommen sollen, werden die Unternehmen nach internen Beratungen und Gesprächen mit offiziellen Stellen entscheiden. Bereits zuvor hatte die Bertelsmann AG zugesichert, die Hinterbliebenen der Opfer mit insgesamt zwei Millionen Dollar zu unterstützen. Der Konzern werde, so der Vorstands-Chef Thomas Middelhoff, je eine Million den entsprechenden Hilfsfonds von Polizei und Feuerwehr zukommen lassen. “Unsere Antwort auf den Terror kann nur Zivilcourage und Solidarität sein. Wir werden alles dafür tun, zu einer friedlichen Welt zurückzukehren”, so Middelhoff. Auch amazon.com sammelt Spenden für das amerikanische Rote Kreuz. Statt aktueller Angebote aus dem Verkaufs-Sortiment veröffentlicht der Shop einen Spendenaufruf. Bisher habe man nach eigenen Angaben 1,9 Millionen Dollar sammeln können. Die Bands, die ihre Auftritte stattfinden lassen wollen, werden ebenfalls einen nicht näher definierten Anteil der Einnahmen spenden. Zu diesen Gruppen zählen die auch Backstreet Boys und Lynyrd Skynyrd. Die Reaktionen von Bekannten und Musikern, die in New York ansässig sind, drücken den Schock in klaren Worten aus. Gunter Hampel (Jazzkantine) schrieb seine ersten Eindrücke auf die offizielle Seite: “Ich habe die beiden Tuerme des Wahrzeichens amerikanischer Power – World Trade Center -, in Schutt und Asche zerbersten sehen und fühlen. Die Welle von Staub und Druck und das Geschrei der Menschen in den Strassen, machten einen glauben, die Totenschreie der tausenden von Menschen zu hören und zu spüren, die in diesem Moment in den Tod gehen.”

Auch Moby gab erneut preis, was in ihm vorgeht: “Everyone in New York is trying to cope, but none of us really know how. We pretend it`s not real, but it is, and you can`t avoid it for too long. None of us know who has died. We all know people who worked in those buildings or who lived nearby. So we wait. And cry. And drink. And get numb. And get angry. And get sad. The toughest city in the world, but we have no idea how to deal with this. I`m not asking for extra sympathy for people who live in or near Manhattan, but just be understanding and patient with us. Please.”

Auch in kleinen Teilen des alltäglichen Musik-Lebens werden die Ausmaße der Katastrophe deutlich sichtbar. Musiker melden sich zu Wort, Touren werden abgesagt, Alben vom Markt genommen und das Musik-Business teilweise auf Eis gelegt.

Pantera haben ihre Teilnahme an der Tattoo The Planet-Tour abgesagt. In einem Statement der Band heißt es: “There are no words worthy to express the sorrow we feel for those who lost loved ones in yesterday`s terrible tragedy. We have made the decision to cancel our participation in the upcoming `Tattoo the Planet` tour of Europe. We apologize to our international friends and fans that we planned on jamming and partying with, but there is absolutely nothing in the world worth compromising their safety or ours.” Von den anderen Bands, die die Tour in Europa mitfahren wollen, gibt es noch keine Nachrichten über eventuelle Absagen. Noch sieht es so aus, als würden Slayer, Static X, Biohazard, Cradle Of Filth und Vision Of Disorder ab dem 22. September für die fünf Termine nach Deutschland kommen. Die Konzerte in England und Irland fallen allerding aus, da es sowohl für Slayer als auch für Static X momentan keine Möglichkeit gibt, die Staaten in Richtung Europa zu verlassen. Auch der für morgen angesetzte Air & Style Contest in Berlin wird nicht stattfinden. Die Veranstalter sehen sich “außer Stande, eine Veranstaltung in diesem Format auszutragen. Aufgrund der unglaublichen und zutiefst erschütternden Szenerie, die sich abgespielt hat, ist es für uns rein menschlich gesehen unmöglich, diesen Contest durchzuführen.” Die Tickets können an den bekannten VVKs zurück gegeben werden.

Die Termine der Drum Rhythm Night finden statt, allerdings mit einer nicht kompletten Besetzung. Ursula Rucker kann momentan ebenfalls nicht aus den USA ausreisen, so dass die Konzerte heute, morgen und übermorgen lediglich mit dem Trüby Trio und Mark Rae stattfinden werden.

Ebenfalls abgesagt wurde soeben die Tour von Widespread Panic, die die Band vom 01. bis zum 05. Oktober durch Deutschland führen sollte.

To whom they pay taxes to protect them from this sort of unspeakable atrocity. As tax-paying private citizens we have been failed by the institutions in which we once placed a modicum of trust.

I`m sorry for sounding so clinical, but I`m fucking furious. Lax security has caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people.

Criticize me if you want for being out of my mind with rage, but I`ve just watched 40,000 people die.

PJ Harvey bekam gestern den Mercury Prize verliehen. Sie konnte ihn allerdings lediglich telefonisch annehmen, da sie sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt in Washington D.C. aufhielt. Während des Gesprächs mit den Preisverleihern sagte sie: “I`m absolutely shocked. The whole city is in a state of shock here. It`s a very surreal day.” Der Vorsitzende von `Mercury`, Simon Frith, sagte vor der Preisverleihung: “I would like to say on a day like this in my opinion music matters more than ever.”

Die Linkin Park Gold-Verleihung, die gestern Abend im Anschluss an das Hamburger Konzert der Band stattfinden sollte, fiel dagegen aufgrund der Geschehnisse aus. Auf der Homepage der Band hieß es: “Due to the tragedy in the US, the Linkin Park show tonight has been cancelled.” Ob die Band das Konzert nachholen wird, steht momentan noch nicht fest. Neben Linkin Park sagten auch eine Reihe anderer Künstler ihre Konzerte ab. Die `Latin Grammy Awards`-Verleihung, die gestern im ‚Los Angeles Forum’ stattfinden sollte, fiel aus. Auch Madonnas Shows wurden auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben. Die aktuellen und anstehenden US-Touren von Weezer, Tool, Redman, Godsmack, Jimmy Eat World, den Charlatans und vielen anderen fallen ebenfalls aus. Sting, der gestern im italienischen Tuscany für ein Webcast auf die Bühne gehen sollte, teilte dem Publikum mit, dass er lediglich einen Song spielen werde: “We have three choices, you know – one is, the show must go on, the other is not to do anything at all, and the band and I came up with a compromise. We`d like to have one number on the webcast for the rest of the world to see and then shut it off as a token of respect to those who`ve lost their lives and those who`ve lost loved ones in this terrible event. Then it`s up to you, how you feel. I`d like a minute`s silence after that song. I don`t want any applause, I just want us to stand there and think about what`s happened today. I`m angry, I`m confused, I`m frightened, and I don`t really want to give this meaningless act of violence any credence. It`s totally and utterly pompous. We`ll sing a song for those people who have lost their lives. Thank you.” Mehrere Bands äußerten sich auf ihren Homepages zu den Anschlägen: Jimmy Eat World sagten auf ihrer offiziellen Homepage: “In light of the current nationwide crisis, we are postponing our show in Detroit. We apologize, but we hope you understand this is beyond our control. Our thoughts are with the people who have lost their lives in this horrible tragedy, as well as with their families and friends.” Weezer äußerten sich ebenfalls über das Internet: “Todays show in San Jose has been postponed by order of the State of California and the City of San Jose, due to the nationwide state of high alert from the awful terrorist attacks earlier today. The entire weezer family sends out our thoughts and sympathies to all the victims of this mindless carnage. We all have a lot to think about today.”

Auch auf der Homepage der Donots gibt es einen Eintrag: “Ich frage mich als Mensch, wie es möglich ist, dass es Menschen gibt – und mir fällt es schwer sie als Menschen zu bezeichnen, noch schwerer aber, einen realistischen Begriff zu finden – die zu solch grausamen Anschlägen, wie heute in New York geschehen, fähig sind. Mein Mitgefühl (und ich bin sicher, ich spreche im Namen aller Bandmitglieder, der ganzen Crew und hoffentlich allen, die das hier lesen ) geht an alle Opfer (auf welche Weise auch immer) dieser Katastrophe! Ich bin geschockt…”

Die Show von Radiohead gestern in Berlin fand entgegen aller Erwartungen statt. Thom Yorke sagte nach dem vierten Stück, dass er sich nicht zu den Terroraschlägen äußern wollen würde: “What should I say after today?”

Die New Yorker-Version von Cypress Hills “Smoke Out”-Show wurde auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben. Die Betreiber des Venues weigern sich, die Show in ihrer Halle stattfinden zu lassen. Die Show, bei der auch die Deftones, Fear Factory, Redman und die Long Beach Dub Allstars auftreten sollten, wurde “plötzlich als nicht zum `PNC Arts Center` passend eingestuft,” so ein “Smoke Out”-Sprecher. +++ Über das Label `Raketemusik` kann man ab dem 01. Oktober wieder Blackmails selbstbetiteltes Debüt-Album auf Vinyl erstehen. Außerdem haben Blackmail, wie bereits berichtet, einen Song zu einer John Sinclair-Folge (“Das Horrorschloss im Spessart”) beigesteuert. +++ Iron Maiden werden eine Pause einlegen, weil Frontmann Bruce Dickinson in den kommenden zwölf Monaten eine Solo-Platte aufnehmen will. +++ Ocean Colour Scene haben ihre US-Tour auf Ende November verschoben. Bassist Damon Minchellas Handgelenk bereite ihm darartige Schwierigkeiten, dass an eine Tour derzeit nicht zu denken sei, so ein Sprecher der Band auf der offiziellen Homepage. +++ Heute wird in den Staaten ein Tool-Tribute mit dem Titel “Third Eye Open: The String Tribute To Tool” veröffentlicht. Die Einnahmen aus dem Verkauf des Songs gehen an die AIDS-Forschung. Moby sagte über seine Aufgabe bei dem Projekt: “Das Problem ist, dass Bono all diese wirklich guten Sänger dabei hat, wie Beyonce Knowles von Destiny`s Child und diesen Typen von Staind – alles Leute, die wirklich singen können. Es wäre echt jämmerlich, wenn ich da mitsingen würde. Ich werde vielleicht einen Remix von dem Song machen oder beim Produzieren helfen.”

Stolze 150.000 Einheiten ihres Debüts Hybrid Theory konnten Linkin Park bislang in Deutschland absetzen.
